A How to guide to Services at The Woods Surgery

How do I..?

Make an Appointment

At the moment we are able to offer phone consultations to all patients, after which a face to face consultation may be offered. We are still offering face to face antenatal appointments and childhood vaccinations.

Please phone the surgery to make an appointment which we will endeavour to provide with the doctor of your choice. It may not always be possible to see your doctor of choice in an emergency, but we will ensure you are seen as quickly as possible. If the doctor of your choice is not available in the time-frame you require, you will be offered an appointment with another doctor who will also have access to your medical file.

We reserve appointments each day for medical emergencies that arise at short notice. Please do not attend the emergency clinic for routine matters such as repeat prescriptions or driving licence medicals etc. Remember some day you may need that emergency appointment.

Request a repeat prescription

The optimum time to request a prescription is during a consultation with your doctor as this is the best way to manage your condition and treatment. However, if you need to request a repeat prescription between consultations, we endeavour to provide a three day turn around service. You can request your repeat prescriptions by phoning the surgery or by calling to reception where we can provide you with a list of your repeat drugs. We ask that you check this carefully ensuring that it is up-to-date and accurate. In this way, we can ensure a safe and effective service. Sometimes a note from the doctor will be attached to the prescription indicating that follow-up tests or checks are required. Please follow these instructions before your next prescription is due.

Sometimes it is not possible to issue a prescription without first seeing a doctor or you may be asked to attend for blood tests to ensure your condition is properly managed.

Get a blood test

We operate a blood clinic every morning by appointment from 8:30 to 10am, Monday to Thursday. Your test needs to be ordered by a doctor of the practice in advance. Due to the high demand for blood services, we are no longer able to carry out blood tests requested by public hospitals.

Get test results

Patients can phone the Woods Surgery for the results of blood tests or radiology (x-ray, MRI, Scans) one week after the test has been taken. Always check on the results of any test carried out or ordered by the surgery. We would request patients phone the surgery after 11:30am.

Get a smear test

Free smear tests are available for those who are eligible on the Cervical Check scheme. To check your eligibility, go to cervicalcheck.ie. Please phone the surgery to arrange an appointment at a convenient time for you, stating the purpose of the visit. Our nurse and all of our female doctors are qualified smear takers and will be happy to see you for this purpose. When arriving for your appointment, please bring along your letter from Cervical Check so that we can verify your eligibility for a free test. Mid-cycle is the optimum time for taking a smear.

Cervical Smear results are sent directly to your home address in 6 weeks or less by Cervical Check and you will be notified when to repeat the test. If you haven’t received your results after 6 weeks, please contact the surgery and we can follow up on your behalf.

Find out the fee

Our normal consultation fee is €60 and for a return visit for the same issue within two weeks is €40. Normal blood tests are €30. A repeat prescription is €20. Other fees apply for medical procedures and administrative tasks such as form filling or letter writing. A full list can be viewed at our reception or ask any member of staff.

Holders of valid medical cards are exempt from standard fees but some fees will apply for items not covered under the General Medical Scheme such as driving license examinations, health screening and some screening blood tests. Please check with reception staff or Citizens Information.

We accept cash or credit cards but do not accept cheques.
